A great time was had by all who attended the 2010 ASNA respite and training weekend.  With glorious sunshine and wonderful company, many were heard asking why the weekend had to end. This year saw the greatest number of attendees, 125 families, volunteers and leaders  from all over the country Reading, Nottingham, Oxford, Bracknell, Birmingham and many more!

Delgates attending for the first time were asked to express thier experience. A carers who attended with her son said she ‘didn’t want to leave’..she felt great and will definately come back next year! Another parent carer expressed her initial apprehension about the weekend which was soon swept away by  her experience of a ‘family spirit and the sense of freedom as her son who is usually seen as difficult by other church members, was welcomed and seen to be  like all other children.

The health workshops, songs, experience sharing  by the campfire and the fun activities for the children provided opportunity for families tomeet new friends and have a short break. The ASNA Extra General Meeting on the Sunday morning enabled trustees to engage with ASNA members to determine thier interests, concerns and ideas for the future of ASNA.

ASNA family weekend 2011 will be held in Northampton at the Frontier centre in April. More details will follow closer to the time.

The SDA church in Wellin will be hosting a Disability Awareness Day. This will be an all day program on the 25th September 2010. The disability coordinator will be leading on issues aimed at raising the awareness of disability  facing the church and its community. ASNA will be supporting this program. The SDA church in Aberdeen will be hosting a Disability Awareness Day. This will be an all day program on the 11th September 2010. The  program promises to be an inspiring one. The disability team  in Aberdeen led by Christine Leiper  have put together a program aimed at raising the awareness of disability issues facing the church and its community. ASNA will be presenting a disability awareness training day at the High Wycombe Adventist Church on the 19th June 2010.

I often get phone calls from church members around disability and access. I recently received a call from a member….’I am a newly appointed disability coordinator in my church. Do you have any ideas and suggestions to get me started?’ I was able to give a number of suggestions to help get her started. I was particularly pleased to hear that she had the ‘Disability coordinators Manual’ launched in 2008 at the annual disability cocoordinators conference and that she was using it as a reference and training tool. She was finding the manual very useful as an introduction to disability issues and was even quoting references to support her passion and ideas.

This manual was developed by ASNA in partnership with the BUC as a training tool to enable and empower volunteers who support the involvement of disabled members in the life of the church. Disability coordinators also determine and address access issues and raise the awareness of the needs of disabled people with in the church. The manual was  designed in a A4 ringbinders as a resource that could be easily updated.
